The unexpected drama unfolded when Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia, known for his blunt political rhetoric, deviated from the religious tone of the event.

What was meant to be a solemn and respectful farewell for long-serving NICA bishop Njeru Nyaga in Kavutiri, Embu, on Sunday, June 29, 2025, quickly descended into political uproar and near chaos.

The unexpected drama unfolded when Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia, known for his blunt political rhetoric, deviated from the religious tone of the event.

Taking the podium, he launched into a blistering criticism of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing him of authorizing police to open fire on protesters involved in the recent Gen Z-led unrest, particularly those implicated in attacks on police stations.

However, it was Kaguchia's revelation that Parliament was preparing a motion to impeach Murkomen that ignited outrage among congregants.

What began as murmurs of disapproval swiftly escalated into open protest. Agitated worshippers shouted him down, warning against turning the sacred occasion into a political stage. "This is a church, not a campaign ground!" several voices rang out.

Matters quickly worsened as a group of angry men stormed the podium and yanked the microphone from Kaguchia, abruptly cutting short his remarks. The atmosphere turned tense, teetering on the brink of violence.

Sensing the risk of a full-blown confrontation, a group of church leaders moved swiftly to form a protective ring around the embattled MP, shielding him from the hostile crowd.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who remained seated on the podium throughout the ordeal, stepped in to defuse the escalating tension.

"We have been worshipping all morning. Introducing political debates that upset the congregation is completely inappropriate. Let’s restore order no more speeches,” she declared firmly.

Earlier, Kaguchia had arrived at the venue in the company of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji. Mbarire had initially welcomed Mukunji to offer his remarks, and he had subsequently invited Kaguchia to speak.

But what was intended as a heartfelt send-off for a respected bishop turned into a dramatic confrontation between politics and faith an incident that is certain to remain the talk of Embu for days to come.
